As you already know, 2020 is an election year. The general election will be taking place on November 3, 2020. Are you registered to vote? Here's everything you need to know about registering to vote and more. 

Why is voting important?

Voting is an important part of a democracy, and can make a big impact on your quality of life, especially in New York City.  In this blog, we've outlined all the information you need to make sure you get out and vote.

When is the New York general election?

The New York general election is Tuesday, November 3, 2020. 

When is the deadline to register to vote?

The deadline to register to vote in New York is October 9th. This means you must mail in your registration form with enough time for it to arrive by October 14th. If you are registering via mail or in-person, see below for important deadline dates:

Can I register to vote online?

Yes. You must register by October 9th. You can do so by visiting this website: https://www.elections.ny.gov/votingdeadlines.html

When is early voting in New York?

Early voting in New York will take place from Oct 24, 2020 to Nov 1, 2020. There are nine days of early voting prior to Election Day.

On November 3, 2020, General Election Day, poll sites are open 6 AM to 9 PM.

How do I know if I can vote?

To vote in New York, one must be a United States citizen who will be 18 years old by the date of the next election. Also, a voter must have lived at his or her present address for at least 30 days prior to the election. A voter can request a registration application in person at the county board of election or any New York state agency-based voter registration center. Forms are also available by mail, by telephone, or online.

Do I need my ID to vote at the polls?

No. In the state of New York a voter does not need to present their ID in order to vote.
