Finding out if you’re pregnant can be exciting, scary, or both. At Apicha Community Health Center, we now offer walk-in pregnancy testing services for anyone who needs it.
When getting a pregnancy test, the process can be nerve-wracking, especially if you don’t understand the process or what happens after a positive or negative test. In this blog, we will walk you through exactly what happens when you come get a pregnancy test at Apicha CHC. It’s important to us that our patients are taken care of.
Commonly asked questions about pregnancy tests:
Are pregnancy tests confidential, even if I am under 18?
Yes. We will not share your results with anyone. If you are a minor, we will not tell your parents.
When can I walk in for a pregnancy test?
You can ask for a pregnancy test at Apicha CHC during regular clinic hours.
What Happens When I arrive?
When you walk into Apicha CHC, tell the front desk you are here for a pregnancy test. A receptionist will provide you with a pregnancy test consent form during registration. If you are already a patient of Apicha CHC, you only need to complete the pregnancy test consent form. If you are a new patient of Apicha CHC, we will register you into our confidential electronic health record. You will also be asked to provide your insurance, if you have it. If you do not have insurance, we can still provide you with care. Once registration and forms are completed, a nurse will take you to a patient room.
How you take your test?
A licensed nurse will meet with you and answer any questions you have. The nurse will also perform an HIV risk screening, and offer you testing if you want it. Once you’re ready, the nurse will give you a urine cup (for you to pee in), to collect a urine sample. You will do that in the bathroom nearest to you. Your urine sample will be tested in our in-house lab.
What happens while I wait for results?
You will wait in the clinic waiting area to take you once again into a patient room, where you will receive your results.
What happens with a positive result?
If your pregnancy test is positive, know that you have options. We will provide you with options for counseling, including a quick referral as needed for prenatal care, foster care or adoption, or pregnancy termination.
If you decide to continue the pregnancy, we will offer enrollment in our prenatal program, and schedule you an appointment within 10 days of your positive pregnancy test. If you do not want to enroll in care at Apicha CHC, we will refer you to a partner agency.
If you need more time to think about your positive results, we can schedule an appointment with one of our medical providers who can help answer your questions.
What happens with a negative result?
If your result is negative, we will ask you about your interest in being pregnant. Depending on what you want, we will offer either contraception (birth control, an IUD, etc), or pre-conception counseling. We’ll also schedule you for a Family Planning appointment with one of our knowledgeable medical providers.
If your interest is not to become pregnant at this time in your life, we will talk to you about your birth control options (like the pill, an IUD, condoms, etc.). If your interest is to become pregnant at this time in your life, we can make you an appointment for family planning services with one of our medical providers, and discuss your options further. Whichever is your choice, we will assist you.
What happens when I leave?
Once you’re done with your test and speaking to your provider, you are free to go. Your pregnancy results will be kept for our records. We do not share your results with anyone without your consent to do so.
