This year, from October 25 to October 31, 2021 people worldwide will be celebrating the third annual PrEP Aware Week. This is a public health initiative started in 2019 by the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute to promote awareness and uptake of PrEP, or HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis. This year's theme is "My PrEP, My Safety."
What Is PrEP?
“PrEP” is short for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, and is a safe, daily pill that is used to prevent HIV. It is a new HIV prevention method for people who are HIV-negative, in order to decrease the risk of becoming infected if they are exposed to the HIV virus. PrEP has been approved by the FDA and is shown to be safe and effective.
PrEP is for anyone and everyone - no matter your sexual orientation or gender. It is especially recommended for those who partake in anal sex, have sex with a person who is positive for HIV, or use recreational drugs.
